The 6 hectare Willawong Bus Depot is Brisbane City Council’s largest bus storage facility. The facility includes a state-of-the-art depot administration building, staff recreational facilities, garage and workshops, refuelling and detailing building and associated car parking and hardstand for over 200 buses.
The seemingly utilitarian yet bold nature of the site, its industrial materials and components informed the character of the design. Such a place calls for exaggerations of scale and strong contrasting colours and forms that can be easily read and identified by the transport staff during their daily routines.
The wayfinding system included external and interior signage as well as surface graphic treatments to bus hardstand and safeway zones. A clear delineation between the visitor and staff areas was also a considered in the design.
