King Street
The King Street Precinct is a new urban development between the Ekka Plaza and St. Paul's Terrace. The precinct is a major attractor within the site, hosting a diverse range of activities and spaces. King Street itself is an open air activated retail street, centrally located within the precinct. King Street has two major gateways at opposite ends that feed into the precinct. It is a vital corridor that links the RNA Showgrounds, Fortitude valley precinct, the Medical Precinct and Bowen Hills, all of which are major transport, commercial and residential hubs. The majority of users enter through the Fortitude Valley precinct to the south and the Medical precinct to the north. These entry points act as major gateways for users commuting through the site.
Wayfinding in the precinct has been designed to reflect the visual landscape and the vision of the greater development, while considering it’s principle role and function; activating a key space within a large civic area.
The Wayfinding strategy is founded on the typical patterns of movement by users throughout the site. The main arteries of the precincts were identified and highlighted as the primary passages for pedestrians, with laneways and paths interconnecting and feeding off these corridors.
The Wayfinding instruments available to users are the major landmark identification nodes supported by the suite of finger blade signs scattered throughout the precinct.
The Wayfinding design, look and feel intentionally reflects the historical context of the RNA Showgrounds site, whilst maintaining the distinction of a 21st century urban environment.
