Oh, the Serenity
Byron Bay is well-known throughout Australia and the world for its beach culture. A place of renewal and inspiration, Byron Bay hosts around 1.7 million visitors from Australia and overseas each year.
Elements of Byron is a $120 million eco-resort that caters to the growing importance put on sustainability and adopting a minimal footprint.
The eco-resort allows people to recharge through nature-based experiences in the scenic East Coast environment through eco-interpretative walking trails and immersion in the natural landscape.
The 22 hectare site boasts 75 small villas, pavilion, a swimming pool for adults and a water play pool for children, walking trails, and facilities suitable for conferences and weddings.
The challenge of this project was to create a legible site through a Wayfinding Communication Strategy, linking the diverse aspects of the of the vast precinct together while keeping a focus on the creation of place and identity, while taking cues from the both the natural and built environments.
Dotdash’s design solution for Elements of Byron’s Wayfinding Communication Strategy was established along the ethos of ‘less is more’. The Strategy relies on the use of a minimalist colour palette and family of illustrations in order to guide visitors around the site, providing an authentic experience.
The overarching hierarchy that is established through the minimalist signage and markers makes it simple to transverse the sites. Each villa is assigned a number and colour, which corresponds visually with the colour on the small totems at the front of each villa.
Taking cues from the award winning architecture, our team of designers took cues from the natural environment and surf culture to create the graphic language of the site and bespoke colour palette. Sustainable materials forms informed by the natural environment ensure that the backdrops promote the key elements of the site.
