Inside Out, Outside In
The redeveloped Brisbane City Council Chermside Library was officially opened in 2017. The library now provides valuable services to Brisbane’s north-side community through a host of facilities including a café and quiet meeting spaces.
Dotdash worked collaboratively with Brisbane City Council City Projects Office and Library Services to develop illustrative graphic treatments for a number of key areas, walls and glazing for the new Chermside Library.
Our design solution brings the natural surrounds inside the library space, through evocative shapes of local flora and fauna that counterpoint the library’s pre-existing furnishings and colour scheme.
Within BCC’s theme of “Oasis”, we explored the impressive variety of plant and bird life found in the neighbouring Downfall Creek and Chermside Hill reserves.
The ceiling graphic, depicting native birds in flight, along with the vibrant murals that span across twenty five metres of wall space, captures the energy and movement of the natural surrounds.
We optimised the built environment in telling this story by incorporating the 13 columns into the mural graphic design. The column graphics serve as anchors to the overall design, and bring the local flora out into the open space.
Our design solution contributes to the social fabric of the local community by providing a richly illustrated place of respite for people to visit and enjoy.
