The project included both a wayfinding strategy and a collaborative interpretation strategy developed with the architects and landscape architects RPS Group. The building has performed may functions in it’s life. Originally constructed during WWII for the US armed forces, it has been a pineapple cannery, migrant arrival centre, sugar terminal and container terminal.

The aim of the project was to integrate interpretation to further enrich the terminal and provide visitors with a taste of the history of the site in the North Queensland context. The design incorporated existing historical pieces and materials, photo murals and lighting projection.

The project is the first in the development of the Cityport South Precinct in Cairns. It has achieved nationwide recognition and won a host of awards in the building industry including awards from the National Trust and Australian Institute of Architects.
