Dotdash has designed a signage family for Sydney’s new Inner West Light Rail Extension (IWLRE), an initiative of Transport for New South Wales.
The IWLRE represents Stage One of a larger structure of rail networks, and continues along an existing freight rail corridor. This corridor travels through a diverse range of both high density urban environments, open parkland, and quiet suburban pockets.
Dotdash adapted a ground-up approach by investigating each step of various user journeys though the new light rail system. Wayfinding elements had to be adaptable, yet strong in their visual language.
Taking a Kit of Parts approach allowed for a logical, hierarchical set of elements that can fit together to respond to different needs and environments. It provided consistency and familiarity, and is relatively easily maintained, repaired or extended.
Structural materials such as steel frames make reference to the industrial nature of Sydney’s Inner West. Integration into the built form allows for the minimisation of new structural supports, with specific sign types designed to be applied to the stations various built elements.
The focus has been to design a sign family that is user-orientated and light-weight, with a broad range of applications.
